Last Chance Travel: Natural Wonders

Sad but true, not everything lasts forever. This includes a number of travel hotspots and natural wonders. People have become obsessed with last chance travel opportunities to visit various locations that are disappearing fast.

Add these last chance travel locations on your bucket list for a once in a lifetime vacation experience!

Glacier National Park – Montana

As the issue of global warming rides, the glacier caps at Glacier National Park don’t have much longer. In 1850, there were more than 150 glaciers. Today, only 26 remain.

When you visit this beautiful park:

  • Hike the trails on Many Glacier to view waterfalls and alpine lakes
  • Drive to the Jackson Glacier Overlook to see the glaciers
  • Trek to Logan Pass to see mountain goats and Bighorn sheep

Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve – Mexico

This reserve is just over a two hour drive from Mexico City. Here, you’ll see millions of migrating monarch butterflies that have come from Canada and the United States. Unfortunately deforestation in Mexico threatens this reserve, we plan to replace the habitat surrounding with groves of avocados.

When visiting, some tips to keep in mind:

  • Hire a guide and ride on bike or horseback along the forest trails
  • January and February are the best times to see monarch clustering in massive quantities

Arctic National Wildlife Refuge – Alaska

The Arctic is warming twice as fast as the rest of the world, presenting serious danger to the polar bears and walruses and the rest of the world. The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge now has less water and the sea ice is disappearing.

Recommendations when visiting:

  • Visit the refuge’s Aichilik River delta in mid-June when you can see the caribou and sea ice
  • Polar bear expeditions are offered by Natural Habitat Adventures in Churchill, Manitoba

Great Barrier Reef – Australia

A real natural wonder, the Great Barrier Reef is visible from space and stretches 1,240 miles along the northeast coast of Australia. It features 1,500 species of fish and 400 types of coral. However, this all could be gone by the end of the century because high ocean temperatures are causing terrible bleaching.

Visit this exquisite reef and enjoy:

  • A snorkeling tour to view coral and green turtles up close
  • Humpback whales if you visit June through October
