Say Goodbye to Winter and Hello to Spring Celebrations Around the World

Say Hello to Spring Celebrations Around the World!

While it occurs at different times of year in different parts of the world, spring is a time of celebration for many people of many cultures. Often, no matter where they’re from, people view the season as a time of transformation and renewal. We’ve compiled a list of six spring celebrations around the world—one in almost every continent—to give you insight into the rest of the world, and maybe even spur you to travel!

Magoebaskloof Spring Festival

Haenertsburg, South Africa

Out of all the spring celebrations around the world, those who love flowers may most adore Magoebaskloof Spring Festival. Vast collections of fresh orchids, cherry blossoms, azaleas and more are stunningly arrayed in exhibits and gardens, and some can be purchased. Admire the sights and smells of the flora, and also enjoy some light refreshments, peruse and purchase locally crafted artwork and other goods, and enjoy this carefree celebration.

Bali Spirit Festival

Bali, Indonesia

When it comes to spring festivals around the world, Asia may be number one. While you’ve probably already heard of Holi—the amazing Indian festival where the triumph of good over evil is celebrated with a “fight” where colorful powder is thrown—there are many other incredible festivals in Asia to enjoy in the spring. One that we highly recommend attending, is the Bali Spirit Festival. The festival is a celebration of creating positive inner transformation, and proceeds support local charities helping children, creating awareness for AIDS and HIV, promoting sustainability, and more. Immerse yourself in international music in a variety of genres, including reggae, folk, and even some pop music, and take workshops in meditation, yoga, dance, and martial arts. Purchase locally crafted, intricate jewelry and other goods in market stalls, and enjoy a massage in a healing hut.

Sydney Fringe Festival

Sydney, Australia

One of the best spring festivals around the world for art and music enthusiasts is the Sydney Fringe Festival—the largest independent arts festival in New South Wales. Visit, and you’ll be able to check out over 300 performances/exhibits, listen to artists talk about their work, and eat scrumptious cuisine. The performances and exhibitions are spread over 50 venues, giving you some idea of how vast this festival is. Performances range greatly—everything from silent theatre to circus entertainment to jazz and more are likely to be present. Visual—and sometimes functional—art can range from edgy installations to adorable animal-shaped teapots.

Beltane Fire Festival

Edinburgh, Scotland

The Beltane Fire Festival is unlike any other. It’s put on by the Beltane Fire Society and involves a 3-hour live theatrical performance—with fire of course! The performance tells a mythological story where seasons are personified and the “Green Man” who has always identified with winter goes through a transformation after meeting with the May Queen. The performance is out in the open, rather than on stage, so there is less of a barrier between attendees and performers, creating an immersive experience. Guests can take breaks at their leisure, and enjoy this primal and colorful entertainment. If you’re looking for something off the beaten path, this is one of the best spring festivals around the world for you.

Maui Steel Guitar Festival and East Maui Taro Festival

Maui, Hawaii

We couldn’t choose between these two festivals, so we included both. Each is focused on a different item integral to Hawaii’s culture. The Maui Steel Guitar Festival showcases an instrument and corresponding style of music that was developed right in Hawaii—steel guitar. Attendees can watch others perform or even join a workshop to learn how to do so themselves. The East Maui Taro Festival pays homage to an edible plant that has played a significant role in the culture and mythology of the state. This is one of the best spring celebrations around the world for foodies, as they’ll get to sample the freshest of taro-incorporated goods at a farmers market. Guests can also try poi-pounding, a traditional method of preparing taro, or eat a delicious taro pancake breakfast. If you go to either festival, we recommend staying at Sands of Kahana Vacation Club or Westin Ka’anapali Ocean Resort Villas.

Estereo Beach Festival

Santa Marta, Columbia

Our list of spring celebrations around the world wouldn’t be complete without a beach festival. Imagine dancing on a palm-lined shore in bathing suits, enjoying decadent drinks and cuisine. That’s exactly what you’ll be able to do at Costeno Beach, where the festival takes place. Plus, you’ll be serenaded by an incredible lineup of live music. Furthermore, the celebration supports environmental sustainability. Get ready to party from 9 AM well into the night in a tropical oasis!
