If you ask people what they’re favorite thing about fall is, many will say the foliage! While the foliage is beautiful, you often have to sit through a lot of traffic to enjoy the best and most scenic areas. All the while, you’re missing out on some other great destinations with just as much to offer during the fall season.

We’ve put together a list of some of our favorite fall travel spots throughout the US. There’s more to fall than just changing leaves…plan a trip and discover it all!

Denver, Colorado

Beer lovers, we’ve found your perfect fall getaway! The fall season brings many brew fests to Denver that will impress even the most seasoned beer concierge. The line up includes the Denver Oktoberfest, the Denver Beer Fest, and the Great American Beer Festival. In total, there will be more than 3,5000 beers for you to try from over 700 brewers!

And for you leaf peepers, the leaves in the city hit their prime during the month of October. View them during a peaceful bike ride on the Cherry Creek Trail, or while walking the High Line Canal.

Portland, Maine

Best known for its decadent lobster during the summer months, Portland is also a great foodie hotspot during the fall. October brings about the fabulous Harvest on the Harbor, which features a wide variety of food samples to try, the Maine Lobster Chef of the Year competition, and much more. The town of Portland is also home to a diverse selection of bars and restaurants that will satisfy your palate.

Hiking is the best way to view foliage in Maine, and we’d suggest a hike up Bradbury Mountain which is located just outside of the town. You can also pedal around and take advantage of the local bike sharing program to work off all the food you’re going to consumer at the festivals!

Santa Barbara, California

Arguably the best time to vacation in Southern California, Santa Barbara will give you great weather and low prices after the summer ends. The weather is also considered better in the fall because of slightly cooler temps and less fog than the summer months.

Santa Barbara is also conveniently located by the Santa Ynez Valley wineries, so you’ll have a wonderful time visiting the multiple tasting rooms, vineyard tours, and beautiful water views that these wineries have to offer.

Virginia Beach, Virginia

As the chaos of the summer simmers down, you’ll love the peace and quiet of the 35 miles of shoreline that is Virginia Beach. Fishing enthusiasts will love the seasonal fishing opportunities, and bird watchers will delight in watching migrating ducks and snow geese.

Also during the fall, you can see Virginia Beach from new heights with a horseback riding tour right on the sand. A great way to enjoy your surroundings in a form of transportation that is far from ordinary!
