Kid Friendly St. Patrick’s Day Destinations in the US

Kid Friendly St. Patrick’s Day

While this holiday primarily brings up thoughts of loud parades, bar hopping, and indulging on whiskey and beer, when you have a family, you may be more interested in a kid friendly St. Patrick’s Day celebration.

Luckily, some of the top cities in the US host fun family-friendly events to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day in a way that is both festive and safe. Here are some of the best kid friendly St. Patrick’s Day destinations across the country.

Chicago, IL

Chicago offers many festive happenings during St. Patrick’s Day, though not all of them are family-friendly. If you’re visiting the city with kids, you’ll want to schedule your activities accordingly.

One of the area favorites is watching the transformation of the dying of the Chicago River. A bright orange powder gets dumped into the river and turns the river green. This is said to be the work of a magic Leprechaun, and it’s fun for all ages to watch.

There is also a family-friendly Downtown Chicago St. Patrick’s Day parade with Irish dancer, floats, live music, and bagpipe players marching down the street. You can then head to the Irish American Heritage Center to celebrate all things Ireland with food, live music, arts and crafts, kids activities, and more.

San Francisco, CA

The West Coast knows how to celebrate and include the whole family with their kid friendly St. Patrick’s Day festivities.

The Crossroads Irish-American Festival features a special children’s hour as part of their month-long event. This hour features dancers from the Brosnan School of Irish Dance with traditional Irish music accompaniment and takes place at the Fisher Children’s Center at the San Francisco Public Library.

Along with the colorful and fun parade experience, the Civic Center will host arts and crafts for kids, cultural displays, and plenty of food for all palettes. Be sure to attend the Annual Greenfest Block Party by Java Beach Cafe with music, dancing, face painting, and other family-friendly games and activities.

Savannah, GA

This southern destination brings a surprising amount of visitors during the St. Patrick’s Day festivities, with an average of 750,000 guests. They hold multiple days worth of festivals and activities, with plenty of kid-friendly fun to be had.

The festivities start with the “greening” of the Forsyth Park Fountain. By the end of the holiday, all of the fountains in Savannah have been dyed a sparkling emerald green. If your kids are old enough, participate in the March of Dimes Shamrock Run 5K, where you can run or walk through Downtown Savannah.

If dancing is more your thing, check out the Irish Heritage Dance at Alee Shriner’s Temple where you can watch and dance along with some of the area’s best Irish step dancers of all ages. Round off the celebration experiencing the St. Patrick’s Day festival with green food and drink to try and watching the St. Patrick’s Day Parade—one of the biggest and most exciting in the world.

Philadelphia, PA

Last on our list of kid friendly St. Patrick’s Day destinations is Philadelphia. Besides green beer and pub crawls, this city is known for its Irish history and fun St. Paddy’s traditions.

Bring the kids to the Torresdale Library for an Irish themed PJ party with fun stories and snacks. The Newtown Irish Festival is an area favorite with live music, Irish step-dancing, traditional Irish food, face painting, and balloon animals. This event takes place at the Green Parrot Restaurant Pub & Patio.

There is even a St. Patrick’s Day party with a session for children. This includes obstacles, zip lines, games, and more. There is also a leprechaun hunt and plenty of kid-friendly activities.
