Active Vacation Activities

Get up from your beach chair and get moving! Vacationing is a great time to explore new areas and try new things. Sure, relaxation is important, but if you are looking for a more active vacation, you’ll want to keep the sunbathing to a minimum. Resorts offer all kinds of opportunities to stay active without feeling like you are just doing a routine workout. Best of all, the whole family can get involved. It’s a great way experience the area and stay in shape throughout your trip. We’ve come up with some active activities that you can incorporate wherever you travel to on your next getaway.

Choose walking

This idea is a simple one, but it is an easy way to stay active and fit while still feeling like you are on vacation. If you have a choice between walking or taking another form of transportation to a restaurant, sightseeing area, or other recreation spot, choose walking! Walking is not only great exercise, but you’ll be able to take in more of the sights and sounds of the new area you are exploring. Golfing is another activity where you can choose walking over riding in a golf cart. Many resorts have golf courses right on-site, so you can walk right down to the course and then get the extra exercise of walking while you play. If you are visiting a city, there are often lots of things to see right in town. You and your family can walk to shops, eateries, museums, and more. If you choose a more rural destination, it’s very likely you’ll be nearby hiking trails, mountains, and other interesting areas to explore and walk about.

Or, go biking!

Biking is another great active activity option when you are on vacation! Rural areas especially will offer scenic trails, paths, and roads for you to explore on a bicycle. Another perk of biking is that you can make it as strenuous as you choose. Go for a leisurely ride around town, or take the bike up a hiking trail to the top of a mountain. However you do it, you are choosing to be active while sightseeing and having a good time. Bike rentals are available at many resorts, so there is usually no need to bring your own.

Try a new water sport

Summer is the best time to splash around in lakes, pools, oceans, and rivers. Water sports are a great thing to participate in on an active vacation. With so many different options to choose from, it’s not hard to find a fun new or tried and true option. Kayaking and canoeing make for a perfect family activity. Paddling can be switched off between parents and kids, and you can stop along the way to snack or go for a swim. Lakes are perfect for tubing, water skiing, and wakeboarding. Tubing is perfect for the kids, and it makes it easy for them to swim around with a floatation device. The older kids and adults will get a real workout learning to water ski.

Maybe you are visiting a tropical destination and want to get up close and personal with the creatures under the sea. Snorkeling and scuba diving are fun active vacation ideas that you can’t partake in on an ordinary day. Many resorts provide opportunities to go on snorkeling lessons and excursions so you can learn from a professional and find the best spots to see what’s beneath the ocean’s surface.

Take advantage of the fitness center

While you may not want to do a traditional, everyday workout, it is always worth checking out what your resort fitness center has to offer you! Many feature unique classes such as yoga, pilates, and spin classes. Taking a class on vacation can be a fun, different way to stay active and change it up from your normal workout routine. On-site fitness centers often feature saunas, spas, and hot tubs as a way to rejuvenate after getting your sweat on.

Go extreme

If you are the adventurous type, maybe you want to try something that goes beyond the average active activities. Certain destinations and resorts provide opportunities for more extreme recreation such as whitewater rafting, ziplining, off-road mountain biking, or caving and canyoning. Some of these activities are more adult-oriented, but kids can crave adventure just as much. Safety is the top priority when you want to try something more extraordinary, so it is important that you take the proper precautions and always have a licensed instructor or guide to help you.

No matter where you choose to travel, you will have plenty of opportunities to partake in an active vacation. Browse our resort rental inventory and take a look at the various activities each resort offers on-site and nearby. Book today and get started on planning your next adventure.
