4th of July Travel
America is the home of the free, because of the brave, and we love to celebrate our wonderful country every July 4th! Fireworks, cookouts, and pool parties are just a few of the ways we love spending this patriotic day.
If you’re really looking to engage in the country’s history, these 4th of July travel destinations are certain to peak your interests. While today is the 4th, it’s never too early to start planning a patriotic-themed excursion for next year or even later this summer!
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Commonly known as “the birthplace of America,” Philly is definitely a place that knows how to celebrate the 4th of July. And they don’t just make the celebration last one day—it’s a full four-day affair!
The party starts with a symphony concert and staged readings of the Declaration of Independence. There is lots more music and even a block party with food and games. The fireworks go off over the Philadelphia Museum of Art and are quite the spectacle to behold.
If you’re traveling there outside the July 4th holiday, there’s still an abundance of American history to explore. Be sure to visit Independence Hall, the Liberty Bell, and Betsy Ross’ house.
Boston, Massachusetts
Boston hosts a two-day 4th of July celebration with big-named pop stars, food, and of course fireworks that can be seen via pedal boats on the Charles River. This all goes down on July 3rd and 4th, meaning you may just want to take the rest of the week off to recover.
There’s plenty more to explore throughout Boston, even outside of the famous Fenway Park. Be sure to walk the Freedom Trail and visit Faneuil Hall and the Old State House.
Williamsburg, Virginia
Williamsburg is 301-acres of living, breathing, American history. Visit any time of year and you’ll think you’re back in colonial times. It’s no surprise that they take July 4th and the celebrations very seriously.
On July 4th, Williamsburg festivities include cannon blasts, tomahawk throwing, themed dishes at the Williamsburg Lodge hotel, and of course, fireworks. You can also walk around the town to see reenactors participating in woodworking and blacksmithing demonstrations.
Washington DC
It’s no surprise that Washington DC made the list of the most patriotic places to travel for July 4th. A trip to DC is a trip into America’s rich history. With dozens of historic buildings, monuments, and museums, Washington DC is a top choice for celebrating what America is all about.
If you’re visiting during the 4th of July, you’ll want to catch the National Independence Day Parade, with floats, drumming, and live music. There is also the Capitol Fourth concert with a symphony orchestra and fireworks over the Capitol building. This concert brings in a big crowd, many including well-known celebrities.
Complete your trip by viewing one of the original copies of the Declaration of Independence at the National Archives and Records Administration and famous paintings of past presidents at the National Portrait Gallery.
