01 Jun Travel Guide: Best Fishing Destinations
The first full week in June marks National Boating and Fishing Month. As such, we’re just as excited as you are to dust off our tackle boxes and try our luck at hooking something huge this summer! With summertime events and holidays like Father’s Day and Independence Day coming up, the time is ripe for choosing the best place for your fishing excursion. Below, we’ve compiled some of the best fishing destinations out there to help you decide!
1. Southern Florida
The always-sunny region of Southern Florida is beloved by fishing fanatics from all over. Whether you’re trophy fishing off the coast of Miami, trying your luck in the swampy waters of the Everglades, or deep sea fishing in the Florida Keys, there’s likely a place for you to embark and reform your connection with nature through the sport of fishing!
Where to Stay: Marriott’s Villas at Doral in Miami, Holiday Inn Club Vacations Sunset Cove Resort in Marco Island, or Coconut Mallory Resort & Marina in Key West.
2. San Diego
Some call San Diego the sport fishing capital of the U.S., and for good reason. The calm Pacific waters outside the city allow for spectacular saltwater fishing, where you can catch everything from halibut to swordfish. San Diego Bay forms a calm fishing environment where even beginners can find luck hooking something, but if it’s the big game you’re after, charter an offshore expedition.
Where to Stay: Grand Pacific Palisades or Carlsbad Seapointe Resort in Carlsbad.
3. Big Island, Hawaii
Another great sport fishing destination is the island of Hawaii, with the seaside region of Kona attracting fishing enthusiasts from all walks of life. Marlin is especially common off the Hawaiian shores, but fishers can also expect to hook yellowfin tuna, ono, mahi mahi, and swordfish. The surrounding Hawaiian Islands also offer plenty of potential for sport and big game fishing, so be sure to explore other excursions in Maui, Oahu, and Kauai as well!
Where to Stay: Kona Coast Resort II in Kailua-Kona.
4. Missouri
Freshwater fishing is at its best in the Midwest! Scenic spots tucked away in states like Missouri can offer prime fly fishing and angling potential close to major vacation destinations. For the best results, head to Missouri’s lakes, notably the Lake of the Ozarks and Table Rock Lake. The usual freshwater suspects can be caught in abundance, like trout, bass, catfish, crappie, and others!
Where to Stay: Marriott’s Willow Ridge Lodge in Branson.
5. Hilton Head Island
Hilton Head provides a plethora of fishing spots both offshore and onshore. The Gulf Stream flows upwards along the Carolina coast, meaning warm ocean waters and plenty of fish. Chartered deep sea fishing trips can take you out to hotspots frequented by snapper, grouper, cobia, spot tail bass, and even shark. If you prefer to stay onshore and cast out from pier or dock, you could see flounder, croaker, and sea trout.
Where to Stay: Marriott’s Harbour Point at Shelter Cove, Southwind II, or Marriott’s Barony Beach Club.
